The owner of a vehicle on January 1st of each year is responsible for the property taxes of that vehicle. Even if you sell it on Jan 1st, the tax would fall back on you. To transfer a vehicle the following documents are required:
- KY certificate of title (clear of all liens) - If there is still a lien showing on the face of the title, it may have been released, but not stamped off. If there is a Henry County lien still on the title, we may release it with the proper termination statement (TC 96-187) from the lender, at the time of transfer. We can not release another county’s lien from that title. If you have an original termination statement from another KY County, we can fax it to that county for $4.00. ($2.00 for the fax, $2.00 for postage)
- Current proof of insurance for the buyer
The title is mailed from the KY Transportation Cabinet and usually arrives with in 3-4 weeks. If you need your title back within a week you must order a speed title for an additional $25.00 fee.
